Our History
In 1985, a group of people in Algona, Iowa contacted the Evangelical Free Church of America. This contact led to the birth of the Algona Evangelical Free Church. On March 16th, 1986, 83 people gathered for their first worship service in the Farm Bureau building. In July, we moved to the Boys & Girls Club. This was to be our worship center for the next five years. The congregation worked very hard to keep up the facility, and the custodial responsibilities were shared by volunteers, a practice continued to this day.
In 1991, after much prayer and financial sacrifice, we felt the Lord leading us towards the purchase of the Farm Credit Bureau building. This was a major step of faith for the church, but in 5 years we were debt free due to God’s awesome provisions!
The bylaws of our church were revised in 1996 and approved by the congregation. These bylaws clearly state the mission and purpose of our church. “The mission of the Algona Evangelical Free Church is to glorify God by so proclaiming Jesus Christ that people may come to know Him personally.” The leadership of our church seeks to maintain this priority in everything we do.
Our church has been blessed over the years with strong leadership. Our first Pastor was Dr. Jes Tarp who came to us in 1986. Our second Pastor was Carl Gutzman, in 1993, and our third was Pastor Sam Faust. Each man brought incredible blessings and friendship to his people. Our current pastor, Todd Hessel, has been serving since 2005.
